It all started with an unscheduled appointment for my sister’s wedding gown, 9 years ago. As an opera student with a rather obsessive taste for anything antique, I was startled by the timeless beauty of the iconic Immagika gown. The first time I set foot in the studio, I could think of nothing else than how the different gowns would look on stage. Soon I managed to squeeze myself into every fitting appointment, just to see what new creations would be on the mannequins next. For my final practical examination, I managed to swallow uncertainty and call for a quotation on a dress. To my amazement, Marlize knew exactly who I was (3 years later) and being a lover of opera herself, insisted to come see the examination; no pressure... Needless to say, it was the first of many “best stage experiences”. Being able to have an audience’s full attention from the moment you set foot on a stage was rather an empowering feeling. Singing in these works of art, has always had a complimentary, rather than an overpowering effect on my performances. I always had the impression that the gowns are designed in such a way that the wearer can never be worn by the gown, only complemented. To model the gowns for magazines was an absolute privilege. In each new creation, I was able to play another character. An Immagika gown is never just a dead piece of fabric; it comes alive with personality based on character traits of the wearer. It was in one of these sessions that I saw my wedding gown 5 years before my wedding. I went to the studio for a shoot fitting, and from the first moment I saw it I knew. It was also the first gown I modelled for Immagika – La Belle. Yes she had a name. Immagika creations are not just factory pieces churned out in their thousands, but lovingly handcrafted couture and proudly South African. These works of art are so unique that they are never overshadowed by that which is in vogue at the time. Instead, it is created on personal uniqueness and timeless beauty. To me, an Immagika gown is the embodiment of the Coco Chanel quotation: “Fashion fades, but style remains.”
